What is ideal weight?

"Ideal weight" is a reference concept: it usually means the weight range or target associated with lower health risk for a given height. Different medical formulas give slightly different answers.

This tool combines two views: the healthy weight range based on BMI (18.5–24.9), and the ideal weights from four classic formulas — Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi.

Healthy weight range from BMI

For most adults, the weight range that maps to a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered the healthy range.

Ideal weight formulas

These formulas start from a base weight at 5 feet (about 152 cm) and add an increment per inch above it:

FormulaCalculation
DevineMen 50 + 2.3 kg/in, women 45.5 + 2.3 kg/in
RobinsonMen 52 + 1.9 kg/in, women 49 + 1.7 kg/in
MillerMen 56.2 + 1.41 kg/in, women 53.1 + 1.36 kg/in
HamwiMen 48 + 2.7 kg/in, women 45.5 + 2.2 kg/in

Keep in mind

Ideal weight is a statistical reference, not a diagnosis. Interpret with care for:

  • Athletes and very muscular people — ideal weight can underestimate their healthy weight
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Children and teenagers — use age-based growth charts instead
  • Different ethnicities — the same weight can carry different health risks

Frequently asked questions

What is ideal weight?

Ideal weight is a reference weight for your height associated with lower health risk. It is usually based on statistical formulas or BMI ranges, used to roughly judge whether your weight is in a sensible range.

Why do different formulas give different results?

Each formula was built on a different population and era, with different assumptions for base weight and per-inch increment for men and women — so results differ by a few kilograms. Reading several formulas as a range is more useful than any single number.

How is ideal weight different from a healthy weight range?

The healthy weight range comes from BMI 18.5–24.9 and gives a span. Ideal weight formulas give a single target. The former is for screening; the latter is more like a rough target reference.

Which number should I use?

Treat the BMI healthy range as your primary reference and the formula results as a target range. Your actual goal should also consider body fat, muscle mass and a doctor’s advice.

Is ideal weight accurate for everyone?

Not entirely. It can be less accurate for athletes, pregnant people, children and others, because the formulas were designed for the general adult population.
