What is waist-to-hip ratio?
Waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) is your waist circumference divided by your hip circumference. It measures fat distribution — excess abdominal fat is linked to higher health risk.
It reflects central-obesity risk better than weight or BMI alone.
How we calculate it
WHR = waist ÷ hip (in any consistent unit). WHO risk categories are:
Risk categories
Based on WHO cutoffs — different for men and women:
Men
| WHR | Category |
|---|---|
| < 0.90 | Low risk |
| 0.90 – 0.99 | Moderate risk |
| ≥ 1.00 | High risk |
Women
| WHR | Category |
|---|---|
| < 0.80 | Low risk |
| 0.80 – 0.84 | Moderate risk |
| ≥ 0.85 | High risk |
Keep in mind
WHR is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. Interpret with care for:
- How you measure — waist should be at the navel or narrowest point
- Pregnancy — body shape changes do not apply
- Different ethnicities — the same WHR can carry different risk
- It cannot replace blood pressure, lipids or other medical checks
Frequently asked questions
What is a healthy waist-to-hip ratio?
Generally below 0.90 for men and below 0.80 for women is considered low risk. Above those cutoffs suggests more abdominal fat and is worth attention.
How is WHR different from BMI?
BMI only uses height and weight. WHR focuses on fat distribution and better reflects the health risk from abdominal (visceral) fat.
Where should I measure my waist?
Usually at the natural waist (narrowest point) or at navel level, measured while exhaling. Use the same spot each time for comparability.
Does a high WHR always mean poor health?
Not necessarily. It flags elevated abdominal fat risk, but you should also look at blood pressure, lipids and blood sugar together.
